Headed for Pittsburgh in September: logic-loving Michael Lumish. (Click to enlarge)
Continuing an annual tradition, the Red Bank Council this week threw a quick spotlight on the town’s highest-ranked student among graduating seniors at Red Bank Regional.
This year, that’s Michael Lumish, of Alston Court.
Mayor Pasquale Menna read resolution that called the 18-year-old Lumish “an exceptional young man and student whose quiet nature signifies a pristine focus and a sense of humility and who has earned the respect of his peers.”
The resolution cites Lumish’s participation in the School-Based Youth Service Program, in which he volunteered as a tutor for younger students, and his work in preparing computers for disabled users. He’s also been active in fundraising for the local CROP Walk and the March of Dimes.
His GPA, he thinks, was 102; above 100, that is, because of bonus points for advanced-placement and honors classes.
redbankgreen asked Lumish what he thought about a sentence in the resolution, which says that “his quest for knowledge in honors and advanced placement classes, in addition to his academy classes, is not an indicator of a lust for weighted grades but rather a true commitment to and love of learning.”
“I think that’s true,” Lumish said. “I think I do it to learn things, more than anything else.”
And what in particular does he like studying?
“Things that are logical. Math, computer science. Physics, I liked.”
Lumish whose mother, Ann Roseman, is president of the borough board of ed is heading to Carnegie-Mellon University in Pittsburgh in September.
