Nancy Kern, the only female mayor in Fair Haven’s nearly two centuries of history, passed away Monday, according to Mayor Mike Halfacre.
Kern also served for a number of years on the borough council before completing two terms as mayor, Halfacre said.
She also was a math teacher at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School before retiring to North Carolina with her husband, Bill.
Halfacre had Kern as a teacher at R-FH, and the one memory of her that sticks out in his mind, he said, was her favorite expression, “Now we’re cooking with steam.”
“Whenever we lose a former mayor it’s tough,” Halfacre said. “She was a very, very nice lady.”
Halfacre said all flags in Fair Haven will fly at half-staff Thursday in Kern’s memory.
