Alexandra Gardell and Chris Kreuter, an engaged Red Bank couple, are featured in this Star-Ledger video about a wife-carrying contest held at a Scandinavian festival in Budd Lake in this weekend.
Complete with a bushy-bearded man in a viking mask talking about how the new wife-carrying event has revived a stuffy old cultural festival, the video shows men making their way around an obstacle course of kiddie pools and staggered tires with their significant others slung over their shoulders.
From the Sledger:
According to folklore, the competition roots back to the medieval era. It mimics the challenges of invading a village and stealing the women. A Montclair couple won the tournament, defeating a group of strongmen visiting from Sweden. The grand prize did not include a trophy. Instead they won the wife’s (or girlfriend’s) weight in beer.
