Red Bank police arrested a 22-year-old man for intent to distribute after he was found to have “20-odd bags” of marijuana in his possession late Friday night, according to department spokesman Captain Darren McConnell.
Veirick Kirlew, whose last known address is in Ocean Township, was also charged with hindering apprehension and intent to distribute within a school zone, McConnell says.
Police had been called to respond to a noise disturbance on River Street near Leighton Avenue at about 11:45p when they approached the suspect, who gave them false identification, McConnell says.
After his actual ID was determined, police learned of an outstanding failure-to-appear warrant and arrested the suspect. A search turned up the pot, amounting to less than 50 grams, but “packaged in such a way as to suggest he was distributing,” McConnell says.
The arrest took place within 1,000 feet of the Red Bank Primary School, McConnell says.
