Middletown police arrested a Belmar man and a Newark woman on drug charges Saturday after a police officer went to their aid and had his suspicions aroused.
According to Lieutenant Steve Dollinger, the department spokesman, Corporal Gerald Weimer was flagged down by the pair at about 8:10p after their car ran out of gas on Dwight Road. Weimer gave them a ride to a nearby filling station, Dollinger said.
After dropping them off, Weimer observed the couple going from one customer to another, attempting to raise cash to buy gas. Though lawful, the behavior prompted Weimer to request a warrant check on the pair.
Turns out each had outstanding warrants. The man, Christopher Hanford, 28 had four warrants from multiple New Jersey municipal courts pending; the woman, Melvina Macon, 33, was wanted on a warrant from South Amboy, Dollinger said.
A search of Hanford turned up a TicTac candy box containing marijuana and a pot pipe, Dollinger said. Macon turned out to have a hypodermic syringe and a substance believed to be heroin on her, he said.
Hanford and Macon were arrested on contempt of court and drug charges and were being held on bail, Dollinger said.
