DONE GOOD: HOP, BOP, BIKE, SWIM ‘N CRAWL

womans-clubThe Womans Club of Red Bank will host a “no junk” flea market on Sunday to raise funds for its weekly jazz shows. (Click to enlarge)

donegoodlogoThe name Fair Trade Town Crawl suggests that they’ve slowed things down a bit, coming off last year’s Shop Hop. But when the Fair Trade Red Bank organization celebrates World Fair Trade Day this Saturday, May 14, it’ll hit the ground running with new products, new participating merchants, and new shopping incentives centered around the retail reveille call of “Fair Trade Your Breakfast.”

From 11a to 4p, a group of downtown business that includes returning FT’ers  Ten Thousand Villages (scene of a breakfast pastry bake-off), soapmarket (where customers can make their own own sugar scrub from fair trade products) and No Joe’s (spotlighting a fair trade coffee of the day) will join with newcomers The Cheese Cave (hosting a coffee cupping demonstration), P.S. Poppyseeds and Good Karma Cafe for an afternoon of discounted merchandise, raffle prizes and other activities. Fair trade food products from vendors like Papa Ganache and The Cinnamon Snail can also be purchased at Red Ginger Home and Yummy Yummy Good Stuff @ Funk & Standard.

The Fair Trade Town Crawl begins outside Ten Thousand Villages (69 Broad Street), where crawlers can pick up a map of the participating businesses, and anyone taking part in the featured event or special at each location can enter to win a Grand Prize (a Rising Tide Fair Trade Beach Tote filled with goodies and gift certificates). More info on Fair Trade Towns USA (and how Red Bank became America’s 15th Fair Town) can be found at the organization’s blog.

From fundraising feats of endurance to “feets of paint,” there’s more Done Good doings in the middle of the merry month of May…

SUNDAY: Red Bank Olympic Distance Triathlon. The Sandy Hookers Tri Club presents the first Olympic Distance Triathlon event in Red Bank; commencing at 7:30 a.m. with a 1.5K swim off Irwin’s Marina, followed by a 25-mile bike ride starting and finishing at Marine Park, and a 6.2-mile run along the Navesink in Red Bank and Middletown. You can register online here before May 13 (there’s also an in-person signup session at Marine Park from 4-6p Saturday, or prior to Sunday’s start time). Proceeds benefit Riverview Medical Center and the 2011 Kaboomfest fundraising drive. Donations may also be mailed to Sandy Hookers Tri Club, P.O. Box 186, Red Bank, NJ 07701.

SUNDAY: Good Stuff, No Junk Flea Market at the Woman’s Club. On the last Friday of each month and for just about as long as anyone can remember, the Woman’s Club of Red Bank (at the old Anthony Reckless Estate on Broad Street) has hosted a monthly house party in which guests are invited to make themselves at home around the historic homestead at 164 Broad Street, to the tune of some of the area’s most fervently followed jazz and blues acts. On Sunday from 1 to 3:30 p.m., these Reckless Steamy Nights — spotlighting member performers of the Jersey Shore Jazz and Blues Foundation — are the beneficiary of a fundraising Craft Fair & Garage Sale that promises “Good Stuff, No Junk” with live music (from the young cats ‘n kittens of the JSJBF’s Youth Project) plus a healthy dose of “Flea Market Adventure!” The sale sprawls out over the front lawn, side driveway and back parking lot, with lots more to choose from for bargain-hunting blueshounds and reckless spenders alike. More info at (732) 933-1984.

THURSDAY, MAY 19: “Kaleidoscope” Celebration at RBR. The National Art Honor Society students of  Red Bank Regional High School present “an interactive celebration of the visual and performing arts” from 6:30 to 8:30p in the school’s “pit” and commons area. Featured are a signature kaleidoscope collage, musical performances, film, face painting, art expos, and, yes — “dancers who perform while painting with their feet.” It’s $5 to get in (just $2 admission for kids under 12), and all proceeds collected will benefit the American Red Cross and its ongoing efforts to assist Americans who were impacted by the recent severe storms in the South. More info at (732) 842-8000 x227.
