GIVING IT A TRY, OR THREE
Dozens of multitalented athletes took to the water and roads Sunday morning for the Red Bank Triathlon, run by the Sandy Hookers Tri Club to benefit the Riverview Medical Center Foundation and the KaBoom Fireworks.
The challenge consisted of a 1.5k swim in the Navesink River, followed by a 40k bike ride and a 10k run.

Hmm. I think often about swimming in the river, especially on hot days, but I remember seeing some pretty gnarly fecal coliform counts somewhere a while back and it always keeps me away. But here we have scores of folks swimming, even with recent rains dirtying up the water, and suffering, apparently, no ill effects.
Anybody have any good data, intel or experience with this? Cause if it really is safe to swim I’m gonna grab my rubber duck floaty and hit it this summer.

Brian,
Come on Monday & Friday nights at 6 pm in Victory park. There’s an open water swim clinic. Bring a wetsuit for now, it’s a bit chilly. I’ve done it the past 2 weeks. Some seaweed, but no jellies yet. It’s ok, but I do go home & decontaminate myself after. No one should smell like the river!

Brian, The Garden State Laboratories Inc., which does bacteriological & chemical testing reported that the water sample taken from the Navesink River by Irwins Boats, 4-27-11 at 9:48am, conforms to state & ANSI recreational bathing standards. The water was tested for Fecal Coliform & Enterococci.
