Six people, including two women in their 80s, were taken to area hospitals following a two-car collision that closed a key intersection in Little Silver for two hours Sunday night, police reported.

According to a preliminary investigation, a Honda Civic driven by Margaret Borden, 84, of Shrewsbury, was attempting to turn left from Silverside Avenue onto Seven Bridges Road when it collided with a taxicab with four occupants.

The cab, a Lincoln Town Car driven by 47-year-old John Christensen of Ocean Grove, was heading south on Seven Bridges, according to police Sergeant Dan Shaffery.

Borden and her passenger, 89-year-old Patricia Blair of Red Bank, had to be mechanically extricated from the wreckage, Shaffery said.

The cab’s passengers were Maria Espana, 31, of Red Bank; Oscar Garcia, 27, of Red Bank; and Elber Vasquez, 30, of Tinton Falls. All three were transported to Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, while Blair and Christensen were taken to Riverview Medical Center in Red Bank.

Borden was taken to Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune, and was believed to still be hospitalized Monday morning. The status of the others could not immediately be learned.

The accident occurred at about 9:05 p.m., Shaffery said. Sergeant Kevin Halpin is investigating.
