Red Bank schools Superintendent Laura Morana is leaving the district at the end of the month, according to a measure approved at a school board meeting Wednesday night.
According to a late addition to the meeting agenda, the board accepted her resignation “for the purpose of retirement,” effective September 30.
The reason for the unusual timing of the announcement, two days after the start of the school year, was not immediately known.
A school board member who asked not to be identified declined to comment on the timing, citing personnel issues.
Morana could not be reached for comment Wednesday night.
A native of Ecuador who moved to Essex County as a teenager, Morana has led the primary and middle-school district since 2006. A public employees’ salary database maintained by the Asbury Park Press shows her salary as $161,200 per year.
