AN ORGANIC TWIST ON COMMUNITY GARDENS

The Red Bank Community Garden is growing into its second year — and Chairwoman Annie Jones, along with Councilwoman Cindy Burnham, are looking forward to a jam packed 2014 growing season full of educational and inspirational events at the Marion Street Community Garden .

On Wednesday, March 5th at 7 pm, the Red Bank Community Garden will kick off the growing season with the first of many lectures and demonstrations  at the Red Bank Public Library. Master Gardener Carolyn Heuser will speak on “Vegetable Gardening with an Organic Twist,”during the free presentation that starts at 7 pm.

According to the chairwoman, “In our first year, we had all of our plots leased. It was a learning year for all of us, but we have tweaked the garden and perfected it.”

“Our water system that was developed and built by Kenton and Liz Sydell along with Tony Slone is just amazing,” said Councilwoman Burnham, “and due to the fact that last year’s gardeners enriched and amended our soil, we are hoping for bigger and better crops this year.”

The garden’s sixteen plots, each measuring four feet by fifteen feet. are leased on a first come/ first serve basis, to Red Bank residents at a cost of twenty five dollars a season. The garden provides “water, compost, mulch, tools and community spirit!”

Several of the plots have already been reserved for the season, interested gardeners are being urged to visit the borough’s website, and go to the Parks & Recreation page to print out a copy of the application and rules. Applications can also be picked up in person at the Borough Hall office of the Parks and Recreation Department, located on the second floor of 90 Monmouth Street.

For more information on the Red Bank Community Garden at Marion Street — as well as future plans for an additional community garden to better serve residents of the borough’s central and west side neighborhoods — call Annie Jones at (732)747-2017 or email at [email protected].
