RED BANK: STONE ON STAGE AT THE BASIE

stonemenzel-6409385David Stone — pictured here with favorite collaborator Idina Menzel — gets his turn on stage this Tuesday, when the Count Basie Theatre welcomes the Broadway producer for a fundraising evening of stories.

He doesn’t sing, dance, juggle, or do magic tricks, but for aficionados of modern musical theater, David Stone is a superstar attraction — and this Tuesday, May 13, the Broadway blockbuster producer of Wicked, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Next to Normal and the new If/Then takes his turn on stage, for A Wicked Evening of Broadway presentation at the Count Basie Theatre.

The Marlboro native — whose early successes included Off Broadway’s Vagina Monologues and The Diary of Anne Frank with Natalie Portman — will discuss his professional start, his hits (or occasional misses), and his ongoing box-office-boffo collaboration with frequent star Idina Menzel, in a benefit for the Basie’s education and outreach programs that teams him with another theater world notable.

A former contributor to the Star-Ledger, the Home News Tribune and the Bergen Record, Peter Marks is the chief theater critic for the Washington Post, as well as a fellow Jerseyan who grew up in Old Bridge and East Brunswick. Marks will be interviewing Stone on stage, in addition to presenting video clips from the producer’s shows and moderating a Q&A session with the audience.

Tickets for the 7 pm presentation ($25, with a $100 VIP option that includes a meet-and-greet with the guests) are available here — and theater fans can also look to the Count’s website to reserve tix for Men Are From Mars…, Chazz Palminteri’s A Bronx Tale, and upcoming musicals from Phoenix productions.
