WHAT’S FOR LUNCH? LOCAL, ON REAL BREAD

morsels mediumThis was the last week of school for many kids on the Green, and if they were fortunate, they took part in a Jersey student’s right of passage: packing a lunch, heading to a park and building a wigwam while learning about the Garden State’s original localsthe Lenni Lenape.

With that memory in the frontal lobe, PieHole this week ordered the Lenni Lenape sandwich at the Rumson deli Locals Creative Fresh Takeout.

The tribe’s namesake sandwich features turkey, avocado, bacon with lettuce, tomato and mayo in a wrap.  There is no greater waste of carbohydrates than the wrap, so we had ours on a sub roll instead.

At 12:30 p.m., the handful of counter seats were taken, and a half-dozen or so customers were hanging around waiting for their orders, so we had little choice but to get ours to-go.

After a five-minute wait for our $8.25 sandwich, we headed for home to eat. The turkey was good quality and tasted like it might event have been store-baked. The avocado and bacon made for excellent additions to the standard lettuce, tomato and mayo. The bread was average – but no doubt better than any wrap.

Locals has a good selection of sandwiches and salads. Since opening in 2013, the deli has undergone another round of renovations, and now offers pizza on the menu as well. We’ll give that a try next time we find ourselves in that neck of the Green.

Here’s the Locals website.
