SANDY HOOK: SUNKEN VESSEL LOCATED
Authorities searching for a 40-foot boat reported to have sunk off Sandy Hook Tuesday afternoon have found a sunken vessel, the New Jersey State Police reported Wednesday morning.
But they haven’t confirmed if it’s the “Jefe,” which was reported missing, according to a statement issued by the agency.
The search, involving Coast Guard and police vessels, divers and helicopters, began with a 4:30 p.m. report of a 40-foot vessel sinking in the Sandy Hook Channel near buoy 14.
Here’s the statement:
The New Jersey State Police Marine Services Bureau has located a sunken vessel in the Sandy Hook Channel.
A State Police vessel, commanded by Staff Sergeant Christopher Wozniak, located a sunken vessel at 8:55 a.m. The boat was located near buoy 14 closer to the beach, using side scan sonar. State Police T.E.A.M.S. Unit divers are on scene to further investigate.
A vessel “Jefe” was reported missing last night and is part of the State Police investigation. At this time, we cannot confirm that the sunken vessel is the missing boat.
Updates will be provided later today if available.
