One of the biggest issues in Red Bank – and New Jersey and the United States – will be the topic of a special meeting of Mayor and Borough Council Monday: affordable housing.
The council has scheduled a special zoom-only meeting for 2 pm Monday to discuss the borough’s obligations under the quotas recently announced for municipalities across the state by the state Department of Community Affairs.
The state announced new calculations on Oct. 18 calling for the creation of 146,000 units of affordable housing statewide. Red Bank’s “present need” – the number of older units needing rehab – was set at 54 units. The town’s ten year “prospective need” of required new units was set at 154.

According to the agenda released last week, the purpose of the meeting is to “permit the Borough’s Affordable Housing Consultants to conduct a presentation to the Council to discuss the 4th round obligations and the upcoming deadlines for DCA. Formal action will be taken.”
The meeting will be held virtually via zoom. It can be watched here.
