Twenty seven Red Bank Primary School students got shiny new bicycles and helmets just before the holidays thanks to a local high school student and a charity that honors the memory of a fallen 9-11 hero.
The Hero’s Holiday Bike drive purchases bikes for kids in the memory of Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Police Officer Ken Tietjen who was killed on Sept. 11, 2001 after going into the World Trade Center to help rescue people just before the first tower fell. Tietjen, who grew up in Middletown and served as volunteer firefighter in Belford, often donated newly bought bicycles to children of need at Christmas.
The bikes were collected with the help of Brie Haverstick, a student at Trinity Hall high school and the Ken Tietjen Memorial Foundation.
