Here’s the answer to last week’s “Where.”
Last week’s photo was a close-up of the red and white striped wooden painted “awning” at Windward Deli and Catering at 254 Maple Avenue where the street meets Drs. James Parker Boulevard/East Bergen Place.
We were drawn there recently by two factors: the frigid temperatures one morning that had the Wheremaster looking for a quick-hit jump-out-of-the-car photo opportunity.
And also by the sign on the side of Windward advertising a two egg, breakfast meat sandwich, and a cup of coffee for $6.75. The sign is well placed, pointed right at Drs. James Parker Boulevard where motorists are often sitting waiting at the traffic light or railroad crossing. And with egg and coffee prices skyrocketing of late, this Pork Roll siren song was too good a deal to resist. I mean, there’s places in town where just the coffee will run you four bucks.
This week’s challenge is also a touching love story of a wife coming to the rescue of her flummoxed husband. “Where” regular Chuck Stern wrote in saying he was stumped by the photo.
“But I showed it to my wife, Eileen Stern,” he wrote, “and she immediately said “The Windward Deli.” She gets the credit. She knew it from frequently waiting for the light on East Bergen at Maple.”
Ah, our hearts are warmed by this tale of spousal love and support. Or maybe that’s just the pork roll?
One person guessed this was Rita’s Italian Ices on West Front Street, which has a similar red and white stripes aesthetic on its buildings. Another incorrect guess was “in the English Plaza parking lot, perhaps the back of Patricia’s.”
