Firefighters rescued a victim who was taken to a hospital by helicopter from a house fire on Shrewsbury Avenue Tuesday morning.
The fire at a single family home at 249 Shrewsbury Avenue between Bank and River Streets broke out shortly after 10 am.
Firefighters from the Red Bank Volunteer Fire Department and Middletown were on the scene with visible smoke pouring from the structure as they broke through the front door. EMTS pulled one person from the rear of the house on a stretcher and loaded the victim, who appeared to be conscious, into an ambulance.
At least one firefighter was being treated with oxygen as firefighters worked in full gear in extreme heat. Police chief Mike Frazee said another firefighter was taken to a local hospital for signs of possible heat exhaustion.
Shrewsbury Avenue remained closed to traffic in both directions as of 11 a.m. with heavy traffic on the surrounding roads.
