Cole Barney wraps up his first sail of the season on the Navesink.

A few ice boaters hit the Navesink River Thursday afternoon for the first few sails of the season as the ice thickened to safe levels overnight.

With the deep cold snap forecast to continue, members of Red Bank’s North Shrewsbury Ice Boat & Yacht Club are optimistic this could be the best season in years for sailing on their home ice.

They welcome spectators from shore, but remind folks the boats move very fast – and there no brakes. Stay well out of the way. (Photos by Brian Donohue.)

“Choppy” gets his Evil Knievel-designed boat ready. Despite the paint job, he has no plans jump any Greyhound buses with his ice boat.
