Here’s the answer to last week’s “Where.”
Last week’s photo was a close-up of a lion head gargoyle on the old borough hall building at 51 Monmouth Street.
The building houses Lakehouse Music Academy and Red Bank Catholic High School classrooms.
It was built in 1882 and served as Borough Hall until 1958, after which it housed only the police department. It is currently owned by Red Bank Catholic High School. Lakehouse leases the space from the school and provides the school with music education instruction.
The borough sold the building to a charity in 1999. It was then sold to the YMCA and finally Red Bank Catholic – a series of moves that sparked an unsuccessful lawsuit aimed at returning it to public ownership.
There were surprisingly few guesses this week, considering this is one of the most notable landmark buidlings in town. The lions are not very prominent on the facade, though. They’re shy, cowardly lions.
Two people guessed the photo was Red Bank Catholic High School. Another guessed St. James Church. Another guessed it was on the Eisner Building, then he changed his guess in a follow-up email with the correct guess. All good! Do-overs are allowed here!
