RED BANK: HISTORIC SITES OPEN FOR FREE “WEEKEND IN OLD MONMOUTH”

By BRIAN DONOHUE

Have you always wanted to take a look inside the North Shrewsbury Ice Boat and Yacht Club’s ancient, trophy-filled clubhouse? Have you walked or driven by the historic homes of the Women’s Club of Red Bank or T. Thomas Fortune Cultural Center hundreds of times but never seen the inside? This is a great weekend to finally do it all.

Folks will have a chance to visit and explore some of Red Bank’s true historic gems this weekend as part of the annual countywide “Weekend in Old Monmouth” event.

Across Monmouth County, there’s a special focus on Revolutionary War sites with the celebration of the 250th anniversary of the nation’s independence this year.

In Red Bank, besides the aforementioned sites, the Monmouth Boat Club is also throwing open its doors for the event. All of the places on the Red Bank list are worth a visit, trust us.

A full list of sites is available here.  For times and dates, see the flyer at the top of this post.

From the Monmouth County Historical Commission:

Visit almost 60 historic sites & museums for free the first weekend in May! A Weekend in Old Monmouth is an annual two-day event, which will take place on Saturday, May 2 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, May 3 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Before you head out, be sure to check out the virtual tour to help you plan your visit. In honor of the nation’s 250th anniversary, sites connected to the Revolutionary era or featuring special 250th programs are highlighted on the map with a star.

Nearly half of this year’s tour sites date to the Revolutionary era, and several are offering special exhibits or programs in recognition of this milestone. Together, they invite us to consider not only what happened here 250 years ago, but how those moments continue to echo through our communities today.
