A sinkhole opened up on Shrewsbury Avenue Wednesday between Chestnut Street and Locust Avenue Wednesday morning.
The Borough of Red Bank sent out an alert stating Shrewsbury Avenue northbound would be closed to traffic along with Locust Avenue between Leighton Avenue and Shrewsbury Avenue.
Borough Manager Jim Gant told redbankgreen a nearby sewer lateral undermined the road surface and caused the collapse. As of 4:30 pm an emergency contractor was making repairs and officials expected to have the roadway re-opened by the evening.

“Now, to be clear, we don’t know if the two are related. But it does raise an important conversation happening in communities everywhere: Can our infrastructure keep pace with the amount of new development taking place?
Roads, water lines, stormwater systems, sewers, and utilities… much of this infrastructure is decades old. As more people move in and new projects are approved, these systems are placed under increasing pressure.
Red Bank is growing and evolving, and growth can be a good thing. But every new development also requires investment in the infrastructure that supports it. The question isn’t just what are we building? It’s also are we building the capacity to sustain it?
