RED BANK: SUMMER OF IMMIGRATION PROTESTS CONTINUES

The protests against the Trump administration’s immigration dragnets that have become a staple in Red Bank this summer continued Friday.

Several dozen protesters lined Shrewsbury Avenue near Catherine Street waving American flags, signs and placards bearing the faces and names of immigrants and US citizens killed by ICE or who died in federal custody. The protests mark at least the seventh day of protests that have taken place in recent weeks.

Congressman Frank Pallone (D-6th District) and six members of the Borough Council also attended the protest.

While early on the crowd skewed older than recent protests, which have been dominated by local teenagers and young adults, a smaller group of mostly young marchers followed up the rally with a March across Front Street and into downtown Red Bank. ICE protest 07242026

Over the past year, masked immigration agents have conducted a number of largely secret arrests on Red Bank streets as party of the controversial nationwide crackdown.

While the number of those arrested since the start of the year appears to run well into the double-digits, the agency has released the name of just one of those arrested, Jose Hernandez-Ruano,  a suspect involved in the Feb. 4 attack of a neighbor with a metal club, a gun and gasoline.

On Saturday, a 6 pm vigil is being planned at Johnny Jazz Park as part of a nationwide series of remembrances of people killed by ICE agents or who died in ICE custody.
