Here’s the answer to last week’s “Where.”
Last week’s photo was the name “Miles” inlaid into the entrance to 65 Broad Street, home to Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash.
We didn’t have to do any research to find out where the name Miles comes from: the Where regulars filled us in!
Bill and Judy Fraser told us the name comes from Miles shoe store, which was located in the space decades ago. They also told us the location was later home to a Radio Shack. Chuck Stern found the 1970 City Directory that lists Miles Shoes Inc. at the address. And Donald Byck told us that Miles was a big national shoe chain owned by Murray Rosenberg, who had a home in Colts Neck where Dorbrook Recreation Area is today.
Who needs Google when we have such knowledgeable Wheresters!
The only thing I can add is that every time I walk by the store the song, “I Can See For Miles” by The Who pops into my head.
Thanks to those who wrote in, many of whom remembered the old shoe store: Linda McCaffrey, Pete DeFazio, Peter Cavalier, Carol Woofter, Alice McKeon, Nancy Schmitz, Mary Lundin, Sue Noone, Vera Vaughan Hough, Thom Rule, Jim Cummings, The Colmorgen Kids, Karen Carlson, Adele Murphy, Joan Raymond, Phyllis McQuillan, Alan Fisher, Jonathan Gilday, Chris Havens.
I hope I got everyone. Please email or text me immediately if we missed you at [email protected] or 848-331-8331. Your sharp eyes and hustle should be properly rewarded.
