Hours after Red Bank Super Foodtown owners announced the closure of Red Bank’s only large chain supermarket, owners of the nearby Atlantic Club Wednesday told members they had secured the purchase of the property to move the fitness club and spa there.

“After an extensive search for the right future home for our club, we are thrilled to announce that we have secured the purchase of the adjacent Foodtown property,” Atlantic Club Chief Operating Officer Kevin McHugh wrote in an email to members.

“This exciting opportunity allows us to create a brand-new health club experience just steps from our current location, designed to elevate every aspect of fitness, wellness, recovery, and the Milagro Spa experience for our members,” he continued.

Geoff Brothers of Brothers Real Estate, who assisted with the club’s search for a new location, said the club is under contract to purchase the property but the sale has not been finalized.

Developer Roger Mumford announced in September he was under contract to purchase the Atlantic Club and roughly a dozen other properties just north of the Broad Street supermarket for a planned townhome development.

Atlantic Club officials told members they were beginning a search for a new home for the club.

In his email sent to Atlantic Club members Wednesday afternoon, McHugh said the club had extended the lease at its current location at 325 Maple Avenue until the Broad Street supermarket can be converted to accommodate the club and Milagro Spa.

It is unclear what land use approvals such a move would require from the Borough of Red Bank.

In January 2024, Kansas-based Genesis Health Clubs, which calls itself “the largest privately owned fitness provider in the nation” with 68 clubs under its control, bought both the Red Bank and Manasquan locations of the Atlantic Club.

The sale prompted a lawsuit from an investor who said the $20 million sale took place without his required consent.

Earlier in the day Wednesday, Food Circus Supermarkets President and CEO Louis Scaduto announced the Red Bank Super Foodtown will be closing for good at close of business Saturday.

Scaduto cited a changing business landscape and “fierce” competition in the greater Red Bank area, which has seen an influx of new supermarkets over the last decade.

“Our family-owned business found it difficult to remain competitive among an emerging shift toward corporate and foreign-owned supermarket models,” he wrote.

“Sadly our 50-year legacy serving the greater Red Bank community will come to an end this month at our Red Bank location due to these market changes.

“We regret so deeply the impact of this decision on our valued team members who stood with us and sacrificed for these many years,” he added.
