A collision with a utility pole on East Front Street in Red Bank early Saturday knocked out electrical power to area homes and businesses and led to a shutdown of the heavily traveled road for much of the day.
The one-vehicle accident occurred at about 2:30a opposite the Welsh Farms convenience store just east of Spring Street.
Here’s the explainer from the borough police department spokesman, Captain Darren McConnell:
An early morning collision on Saturday caused a portion of East Front
Street to be closed for most of the day while utility crews made
repairs.
At approximately 2:30 am, a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by
Madelaine Boersig, 22 years old, of Long Branch was traveling
eastbound and left the roadway striking a utility pole and ultimately
overturning in the street. Ms. Boersig, who was alone in her vehicle,
received minor injuries but declined treatment at the scene. Boersig
claimed to have swerved to avoid an animal in the roadway.
The collision brought down a utility pole and wires in front of the
Welsh Farms convenience store. JCP&L and Verizon crews were on
scene until early Saturday evening. Ptl. David Smith investigated the
collision and the Red Bank Fire Department and First Aid Squad also
responded. No summonses have been issued to Ms. Boersig at this
time, pending review by the traffic safety bureau.
A power outage resulting from the accident was “nothing major or lasting very long,” McConnell tells redbankgreen.
