A pair of Shrewsbury nail salons within blocks of each other on Broad Street were burglarized in the last two weeks, police said.
Nails Plus, at 427 Broad, and Estella Nails, 464 Broad, were targets of overnight smash-and-grabs, Chief John Wilson said.
The burglaries appear to be connected to a flurry of Monmouth County nail salon break-ins, he said.
“I hear Red Bank, Eatontown, Wall Township were hit,” he said.
The first occurred at Nails Plus two weekends ago, Wilson said. The owners, who also have locations in Red Bank and Little Silver, could not be reached for comment. But a Red Bank police official said he was unaware of any salon jobs.
The second break-in, at Estella Nails, happened early last Thursday morning, said owner Perry Jo.
The suspect(s) gained entry through a window on the south side of the building, Jo said, and took a laptop and about $80 from the cash register. Although the window was smashed, Jo found no evidence of what was used to do so.
“It looks very clean, probably they stayed less than five minutes,” Jo said.
Wilson said the burglaries were quick and more than likely linked to others.
“They’re doing one and walking out,” he said.
Jo, whose storefront is just feet from the highway as is Nails Plus said the burglaries are a surprise, given the traffic and lighting in the area.
“With the highway here,” Jo said, “it’s kind of daring.”
Wilson said police are investigating the burglaries.
