Sunday’s big game – Super Bowl XLVIII, in case you’ve been seriously off the grid – will be watched by millions of viewers. But for a spectacle fueled by ads for beer, it’s kind of ironic that relatively few will be taking it in at a bar.
“It’s more of a family and kids event that people like to watch at home” says Tom Ganley, bartender at The Globe in Red Bank. Unless, of course, the Giants are playing.
“When the Giants play in the Super Bowl, we’re packed,” says Ganley.
Still, if you’re headed out to a local bar on Sunday, besides having some decent elbow room, you can expect some specials. PieHole surveyed a few watering holes that we think are well-suited to football viewing.
Tommy’s Coal Fired Pizza & Bar, Red Bank: $1.75 domestics/$2.75 imports. PieHole finds the wings at this place – cooked in the wicked hot pizza oven – a standout item. On Sunday you can get 20 for $12. Tommy’s general manager Joe Orecchio says the restaurant will sell between 500 and 600 pounds of wings on Sunday. If you’re getting them to go, get your order in early.
The Globe, Red Bank: $2.50 drafts
Brannigans, Red Bank: $1.00 drafts and 25-cent wings.
Molly Maguire’s Gastropub, Rumson: PieHole is lucky enough to live a short walk from the bars in downtown Red Bank, but if we hung our hat in 07760 zip code, this Rumson bar would be a good bet for watching the game. They’re running bar specials on Coor’s ($6 pitchers and $2 drafts) and $6 Tito’s Bloody Mary’s. They’re also making up some specially priced platters for the game that draw from their menu of wings, sliders and chicken tenders.
Bonus wing tip for PieHole readers: Brian Anderson, manager of Cluck-U Chicken in the City Centre Plaza expects to cook about 6,000 wings on Sunday. He says calling at least a day in advance is not too early to make sure you get your fix for the game.
