STUDENT SUSPENDED FOR SCHILLING TWEETS

hot-topic_02-220x137-6360205Brookdale Community College suspended a student Monday after retired baseball great Curt Schilling outed him as one of at least two Twitter posters who tweeted sexually offensive statements about Schilling’s daughter last week.

The student, who was not identified by the school, was among two or more Twitter users who suggested they would sexually assault Schilling’s daughter, Gabby, after her father announced that she would be attending college Salve Regina University in Rhode Island and pitch for the softball team.

Schilling, though, identified one of his daughter’s tormentors as Adam Nagel, whose own Facebook page says he is a resident of Edison, student at Brookdale.

On his blog, Schilling had asked for help in identifying the miscreants after “tweets with the word rape, bloody underwear and pretty much every other vulgar and defiling word you could likely fathom” followed his congratulatory post to his daughter.

“The Sports Guru”? Ya he’s a DJ named Adam Nagel (DJ is a bit strong since he’s on the air for 1 hour a week) on Brookdale Student Radio at Brookdale Community College. How do you think that place feels about this stud representing their school? You don’t think this isn’t going to be a nice compilation that will show up every single time this idiot is googled the rest of his life? What happens when a potential woman he’s after googles and reads this?

The other clown? He’s VP of the Theta Xi fraternity at Montclair State University. I gotta believe if Theta Xi is cool with a VP of one of their chapters acting like this I’d prefer to have no one I know in it. Also, does anyone attending Montclair State University have a student handbook? If so can you pass it along because I am pretty sure there are about 90 violations in this idiots tweets.

I stopped because the rest was more of the same. And while these, to me as a dad, are just stupid and vile in ways you can’t fathom, they aren’t alone.

There have been personal tweets, texts and emails to more than one party in all this.

From the school’s announcement, on Facebook:

Students and community members have rightfully expressed concerns regarding recent social media comments made by a Brookdale student.

The Twitter comments posted by this student are unacceptable and clearly violate the standards of conduct that are expected of all Brookdale students.

The student has been summarily suspended and will be scheduled for a conduct hearing where further disciplinary action will be taken. The Brookdale Police are actively investigating this matter. Brookdale takes this behavior very seriously and does not tolerate any form of harassment.

Our sincerest apologies to Gabby Schilling. Her achievement should be celebrated and not clouded by offensive comments.

Nagel could not immediately be reached for comment.

[UPDATE: Brookdale later issued a second statement to clarify that the suspended student was not a radio station DJ but a member of the radio club, and in that capacity “had a one-hour weekly spot on one of WBJB’s student radio streams. He has been removed from that role. The student was not, at any time, an employee or representative of Brookdale Public Radio, and he will never again be associated with the station in any way.”]

Schilling includes screengrabs of some of the offensive posts on his blog below this comment:

Now let me emphasize again. I was a jock my whole life. I played sports my whole life. Baseball since I was 5 until I retired at 41. I know clubhouses. I lived in a dorm. I get it. Guys will be guys. Guys will say dumb crap, often. But I can’t ever remember, drunk, in a clubhouse, with best friends, with anyone, ever speaking like this to someone…
