rb candidates 102814 2The two Republican candidates for Red Bank council in next week’s election had an open field as neither of their opponents showed up for a debate Tuesday night.

Incumbent Democrat Ed Zipprich was out of town on a family medical issue, and fellow incumbent Democrat Juanita Lewis was “called away on business,”  Westside Community Group president and event moderator Amy Goldsmith said the candidates told her.

That gave Republican challengers Sean Di Somma and Linda Schwabenbauer control of the floor at the 18th annual candidates’ night, held as always at the River Street Commons. Di Somma made frequent reference to the absences, and at one point gave away their chairs to audience members who had packed the former school gym.

RFH TOPS LAKEWOOD AS VOLKER STEAMROLLS

Rumson-Fair Haven running back Charlie Volker racked up an astonishing 324 yards and three touchdowns as the Dawgs moved to 4-2 on the season with a win at home over Lakewood Friday night. It was a tighter game than the score indicates, as shown by these highlights from Shore Sports Zone.

RED BANK: GOING TO THE BIG GAME?

rbc 101014 2rbc 101014 5High school football fans are expected to pack the stands at Count Basie Field in Red Bank as one of the most anticipated Shore Conference matchups in memory plays out under the lights Friday night.

The undefeated Red Bank Catholic Caseys host also-undefeated Manalapan, pitting the conference’s top-ranked defense against the Braves’ powerful offense, anchored by running back Imamu Mayfield.

Kickoff is at 7 p.m. and parking will be at a premium, so arrive early. But if you can’t make it, Shore Sports Zone, Rich Chrampanis’s video-based local sports website, will have live updates on the scoring and a monster highlight reel Saturday morning, which you’ll find here.

RFH: AFTER STATE TITLE, FAHEY PLAYS ON

Rumson-Fair Haven’s Kate Fahey returned from a junior year away from high school tennis to become the first state singles champion in school history last week. Rumson-Fair Haven’s field hockey squad, the top-rated team in this year’s Shore Conference Tournament, shut out Holmdel, 8-0, in round one, advancing to the quarterfinals Tuesday. RFH BACK TO WINNING FORM WITH VOLKER

Rumson-Fair Haven Regional’s varsity football team pulled off a 28-21 win at Manasquan Saturday in a game that saw the return of powerhouse running back Charlie Volker after a couple of missed weeks due to injury.  The Shore Sports Zone highlight reel shows Volker, a Princeton commit, tearing it up for 267 yards and tight end  Kenny Farrare hauling in the game-winning TD pass with 16 seconds left to play – a contender for the play of the week. That sets the table for next week’s collision of undefeated Shore Conference “superpowers” RBC and Manalapan at Red Bank. RBR FALLS TO RARITAN

After dominating in the first half, Red Bank Regional dropped its second straight football game as Raritan staged a second-half comeback to win, 35-27, at Little Silver Friday night. That puts the Bucs at 2-2. Rich Chrampanis of Shore Sports Zone has those Saturday video highlights and more.

Rumson-Fair Haven Regional’s varsity football team fell to unbeaten St. John Vianney Thursday night in a game “with plenty of fireworks,” says Rich Chrampanis, of the new video-based website Shore Sports Zone. BOYS’ SOCCER: RBR EDGES LONG BRANCH, 1-0

Justin Gilson netted one on a penalty kick, and that was it for scoring as Red Bank Regional’s boys’ soccer team nipped Long Branch 1-0 on the road Monday. Red Bank Regional defensive back Teddy Mitchell won this week’s Shore Sports Zone game ball for this pick and touchdown against Colts Neck last weekend as the Bucs rolled to a 38-6 win. Mitchell had an interception in each of the two big wins RBR has posted to open the 2014 season. RED BANK: CLIMBING ABOARD & IMAGINING

The Monmouth Day Care Center’s annual on Touch-a-Truck fundraiser at the Red Bank Middle School offered up a photo-op bounty for parents Saturday. Not only did the kids get to touch the trucks, they got to sit in the driver’s seats of a limo, an Army jeep and a police car. They honked horns, asked for keys so they could drive, and went home with memories – which the photos taken by mom and dad will surely jog later in life.  (Photos by Susan Ericson. The second win came on the road Saturday afternoon again Colts Neck, as the Bucs rolled to a 38-6 final score on some big defensive play. After four years of waiting for a home victory under the lights, fans of Red Bank Regional’s varsity football team had their patience rewarded Friday night as the Bucs beat Wall, 21-14, in a game that went down to the final play. Rich Chrampanis of Shore Sports Zone, a new video-based local sports website, has the highlights, including some stellar play by RBR’s Alim Godsey.

GIRLS’ SOCCER: THIS ONE’S FOR MYA

The girls’ soccer teams of Red Bank Catholic and Ocean Township faced off Thursday in a game with meaning beyond the score. This was the third annual Mya’s Cup, in memory of the 10-year-old cousin of an Ocean player who died of childhood cancer last year. Rich Chrampanis of Shore Sports Zone hast the story in video.
