It’s often difficult for individuals to come out as gay. But for families and friends, it can be just as hard, says Dee Reger.
There’s a support group for that.
The Jersey Shore Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians & Gays — PFLAG — will hold its monthly meeting at 7p on Monday at Presbyterian Church House in Shrewsbury.
The group, started in Ocean County in 2004, offers support, education and advocacy for friends and families who are having a hard time dealing with news that someone they’re close to is gay.
It also promotes the well-being of gay, lesbian, transgender and intersex people, Reger said, plus those who are just curious.
“We’re all there to help each other and share experiences,” Reger said.
Mostly parents show up to the meetings, but all are welcome, Reger said.
She launched the Shrewsbury gatherings last September. Before then, the nearest meetings available were in Ocean County.
“I felt like this would be something helpful for people,” Reger said.
