[Update, 2:45 p.m.: NJ Transit identifies the victim as Donald Cameron Jr., 51, of Red Bank]
Authorities have not yet released the identity of a man they was killed when he laid down on the North Jersey Coast Line tracks in Red Bank Saturday night.
New Jersey Transit spokeswoman Nancy Snyder tells redbankgreen that the engineer of a New York-bound train saw the victim walk into the path of the train and lie down on the tracks at the West Bergen Place/Drs. James Parker Boulevard grade crossing at about 9:18 p.m.
The engineer sounded the train’s horn and put the train into emergency braking mode, but was unable to stop before hitting the victim, she said.
Transit officials are withholding the victim’s identity pending notification of next-of-kin.
About 200 passengers were on board and none were hurt in the incident, Snyder said. Crossings at West Bergen, as well as Chestnut and Monmouth streets, were closed for at least an hour while police investigated.
