MAN CHARGED WITH DWI & ASSAULT ON COP

A 20-year-old Red Bank man was arrested early Saturday morning after an accident in which his car overturned and a subsequent assault on borough cops at Riverview Medical Center, where he had been taken for treatment of minor injuries, police said.

Luis Crespo, of Shrewsbury Avenue, was charged with DWI and assault by auto following the 11:27 p.m. Friday crash at Pinckney Road and Broad Street.

Police say witnesses saw Crespo speeding west on Pinckney and running the stop sign at Broad, where he smashed into a pickup truck, overturning his own vehicle.

Both Crespo and the driver of the truck were transported to the hospital, and it was there that Crespo and a friend, 19-year-old Veronica Martinez, became aggressive toward police and hospital staff, said Captain Darren McConnell.

After an altercation, Crespo was additionally charged with aggravated assault on a police officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. He was was transported to Monmouth County Correctional Institution in lieu of
bail set at $15,500, McConnell said.

Martinez was charged with disorderly conduct, obstructing the administration of law and resisting arrest after she attempted to interfere in the altercation, McConnell said. She was later released on a summons.
