RED BANK: WALGREEN’S MOVES STORE

The builder of a proposed Walgreen’s pharmacy in Red Bank has changed the location of the would-be store, moving it a dozen feet in order to avoid a variance request on one of the plan’s most controversial aspects.

The store would also shrink by about 1,100 square feet, according to revised plans filed with the borough in anticipation of a hearing scheduled for Wednesday night.

The changes come after Walgreen’s developer Mark Development Inc. yanked the plan from what appeared to be certain defeat by the planning board last month.

Among the changes to the store, which would be built on the longtime site of the now-closed Rassas Buick dealership on Broad Street:

• The Garfield Place setback has been increased to 16 feet, more than the 15 feet required under the zoning ordinance, and three times the 4.6 feet the developer originally proposed.

• The setback at Garfield and Broad would now be 13.7 feet, instead of the 4.2 feet originally proposed.

• The Broad Street setback has been increased by two feet, to 12.5 feet.

• And the length of the building, another hotly contested issue, was shortened by 10 feet, to 129 feet.

The planning board is scheduled to meet at 7 p.m. Wednesday at borough hall.
