In my days as a cub reporter at my former, not-long-for-this-world papers the Jersey Journal and Star-Ledger, I picked up an important journalism tip from the best scribes: use all five senses when you’re reporting.
If you can describe the sounds and smells and tastes your senses are picking up interviewing a cologne-drenched politician or describing a pizzeria-lined boardwalk, it can help take the story to the next level. In a state known for its dizzying odoriferousness, it was great advice that I employed for decades.
And so, with news of my formers papers’ demise on my mind during a trip down Monmouth Street last week, I smelled something rich and wonderful that surely had some kind of good story behind it. So I followed my nose and produced this video, with the help of Five Dimes Brewery brewmaster Dennis Maciupa, who showed me the source of those great smells that hit me on a warm fall day.
Do you have a favorite (or despised) Red Bank smell you think we should get the story behind? Email me at the address below and maybe I’ll get the lowdown.
