A pair of sinkholes on Water Street caused the closure of a stretch of state Route 35 that winds through Red Bank this morning, creating gridlock conditions and traffic snarls into the afternoon. Drivers are advised to avoid the area.
Borough officials were notified early Monday by the NJ Department of Transportation, which maintains Route 35, that a pair of sinkholes were forming along Water Street with one encroaching onto a traffic lane, according to Borough Manager Jim Gant.
Work crews arrived Monday morning and were still on the scene just before noon with resulting detours and traffic snarls continuing. The resulting road closure caused “significant traffic delays into Middletown” Gant said.
The crew was replacing a gnarled and ancient looking section of storm drain pipe that runs under the roadway with a new section of pipe.
Gant said, “We are anticipating the detour to be around for much of today – possibly until 4PM.” He added, “This closure is not Borough work and was called in and reported to us by NJDOT.”
