Down among the serpentine turns in the Swimming River, this eastern garter snake was found frozen stiff in the frigid weather. There were no signs of trauma, so at first we were unsure if the snake was sluggish and in semi-hibernation mode, or dead and frozen solid. Alas, it appears the latter is the case, with a local colony of feral cats the likely culprits in the killing. (photo and text by Brian Donohue)
