Gothamist reporters obtained arrest data from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and mapped it to provide town-by-town arrest totals for towns and cities across New York and New Jersey.
Gothamist reported:
U.S Immigration and Customs Enforcement has conducted more than 19,500 arrests in New York state and nearly 18,000 in New Jersey during President Donald Trump’s second term, according to new government data. Those arrests are largely of Latin American immigrant men without criminal histories.”
The arrests during Trump’s roughly first 18 months in office mark a surge in immigration enforcement. The sum between the two states is more than double the number of ICE arrests made in the prior 18-month period under President Joe Biden. The combined total roughly exceeds the populations of the New York cities of Ithaca, Poughkeepsie or Rome.
The majority of the immigrants arrested in the two states, who were generally detained for alleged immigration violations, have also since left the country: More than 41% have been deported, and another 22% chose to depart after being arrested, the data shows.
Over the past several months, Red Bank has been the scene of numerous street corner arrests by masked agents.
“It’s become a daily occurrence, and it is really, really impacting everyday life in Red Bank,” Deputy Mayor Kate Triggiano said in July.
The arrests also sparked a series of ongoing protests in the borough, some organized by local youth.
Unlike local police departments, ICE does not release the names of individuals arrested and accurate tallies have been difficult to come by.
Red Bank’s total compares to 436 arrests in Freehold Borough, 66 in Asbury Park and 134 in Long Branch.
