RED BANK: TRUCK STRIKES W. FRONT STREET BRIDGE…AGAIN

(Photos by Cathy Tobin)

By BRIAN DONOHUE

UPDATE: The streak may not have been very long after all. See update to this story below.

An unusually long streak of days without a truck striking the West Front Street railroad overpass ended Tuesday afternoon when the driver of this truck (above and below) underestimated the height of the bridge, as so many who have come before have done.

Reader Cathy Tobin sent us these images taken around 1 pm of what appears to be a an eastbound box truck stuck under the NJ Transit trestle.

It happens. And when it comes to this particular span, it happens quite often.

The problem has sparked tension between Red Bank and Monmouth County Officials and prompted officials to outfit the road with new flashing warning lights and signs cautioning of the 10-foot, 11 inches height restriction several years ago.

Officials said the signage did seem to reduce the number of incidents somewhat.  The last such incident in our archives occurred in December 2023 but that doesn’t mean we didn’t miss one or two.

Red Bank Police were on the scene of Wednesday’s incident. We will update this post if further details become available – or we’ll just update the situation when it happens again.

UPDATE: Turns out we did miss one. After this story was published a reader sent us this photo of a truck vs. trestle crash on May 18, 2024.
