A woman who was struck by the driver of an SUV while walking on a Red Bank sidewalk in March has died from her injuries, according to the victim’s son and police.

Nancy C. Herman, 75, of Oceanport, died May 2 as a result of injuries sustained six weeks earlier on March 19, according to her son Jeremy Herman.

“She fought hard to stay with us, but it was not to be,” reads an obit provided by the family.  “Throughout that period, she was lovingly encouraged and sustained by her children, her husband, former and current pastors from her beloved Tower Hill Church, and by the prayers of her many friends.”

Police say Herman was walking east along the sidewalk past the entrance to a parking lot alongside Teak Asian Fusion at 68 Monmouth Street when she was struck by a vehicle entering the driveway.

She was briefly trapped under the Toyota Rav4 until employees of the restaurant and emergency responders rushed to lift the vehicle off her.

The driver, Emilia Vasquez De Menjivar of Tinton Falls was issued summonses for careless driving, view obstruction on windshield, and rate of speed crossing sidewalk, according to police. Red Bank Police Chief Mike Frazee said the incident is now being considered a fatal accident.

Jeremy Herman provided the following obituary:

Our sweet and beloved Mother, Grandmother, Sister, Wife, Aunt and friend died peacefully on May 2 after a six-week struggle. She fought hard to stay with us, but it was not to be. Throughout that period, she was lovingly encouraged and sustained by
her children, her husband, former and current pastors from her beloved Tower Hill
Church and by the prayers of her many friends.

Nancy leaves behind her high school sweetheart and husband of 55 years, Daniel D, her children Shaun, Seth (wife Karen), Rachel, and Jeremy (wife Lindsay), her grandchildren, Dylan, Renata, Miles, Caleb and Jacob, her brother Don (wife Janet) and
nephew Scott and nieces Lauren and Alyson. She also leaves behind her many friends and friends of Bill W. Nancy was raised in South Orange, New Jersey and graduated Columbia High School.

She attended Wells College and Kirkland College and received her bachelor’s degree from Cleveland State University. Nancy was extremely intelligent, strong willed, sensitive to the needs of others, forthright and honest.

She was dedicated to her church, serving several roles, including Deacon, Deacon Moderator and Head Usher.

Nancy had several jobs in her lifetime but her greatest joy in life and her all-consuming occupation was raising her four children. They live on today as a testament to her brilliance and dedication. Nancy was always guided by and sustained by her relationship with and faith in her loving God.

She was extremely sensitive and was deeply troubled by injustice and man’s mistreatment of his fellow man and the earth God gave us. She made every place she lived more beautiful. It was one of her many gifts. Heaven is perfect for Nancy. She will be sorely missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Nancy at Tower Hill Church, 255 Harding Rd, Red Bank at 11am on Saturday, May 24. A reception will follow in Webster Hall.
