Red Bank Police and NJ Transit confirmed a pedestrian had been struck by the train scheduled to arrive in Long Branch at 1:38 p.m.
Several NJ Transit workers were overhead at the scene saying a woman had dropped a ticket on the tracks and was clipped by the train while trying to retrieve it.
Red Bank Police Chief Darren McConnell confirmed she sustained a non-life threatening hip injury and was taken to Riverview Medical Center. McConnell also said the 47-year-old Freehold woman appeared to be trying to retrieve an item from the tracks. Witnesses recounted the woman telling emergency workers she thought she was not badly injured.
The southbound train was cancelled pending an investigation into the incident and passengers were off loaded and directed to the platform on the east side of the tracks. Another train from New York City then arrived on that track to continue them on their route.
The empty southbound train continued to Long Branch at 3 pm, re-opening the crossing at Monmouth Street that had been closed since the incident.
