RED BANK: POND CLEARED FOR TROUT SEASON

rb mohawk pond 033014 2rb mohawk pond 033014About a dozen members of Monmouth County sportsmen’s clubs turned out in a cold drizzle to clear debris and phragmites from Red Bank’s Mohawk Pond Sunday morning, in anticipation of this week’s annual restocking of the pond with trout by the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife.

Afterward, participants watched a pair of ospreys soar above the pond and a admired a blue heron, right, as it fed a the pond’s western edge. According to the state, the pond is slated to receive a total 960 rainbow and brown trout this season, which opens Saturday at 8 a.m. (Photos by John T. Ward. Click to enlarge)

RUMSON CHIEF-TO-BE: “IT’S NOT ABOUT ME”

Shrewsbury’s not the only town on the Green to have had a changing of the guard in its police department this week.

On Monday, the same day Lou Ferraro was sworn in as chief in Shrewsbury, Scott Paterson’s elevation to acting chief in Rumson quietly took effect. He’s expected to be sworn in as chief on January 1.

Low-key and unceremonious is fine with Paterson, a lieutenant who’d been serving as “officer in charge,” in the words of a council resolution, since former Chief Rick Tobias stepped away to burn off accumulated vacation time on August 1.

“It’s not about me,” Paterson told redbankgreen in an interview in his small, utilitarian office in the basement of Memorial Hall on Wednesday. “I think the guys who work here need to know that I hold myself no better than the highest or lowest-ranking employee.”

A misty fog offered the perfect hunting-in-the-field vibe for nearly 50 enthusiasts who gathered for a trap-shooting event at the Rumson Country Club Saturday.

Shotgun blasts broke the morning calm as 47 participants took turns firing at orange discs lofted into the air at the the Monmouth County chapter of Ducks Unlimited‘s third annual clay shoot, a fundraiser for the conservation and maintenance of North American wetlands.
