It’s beginning to give way to Spring around the greater Green, and as our stocks of winter provisions dwindle down to the last few scraps of venison jerky and home-canned jars of okra, we emerge from our dwellings in search of our foodie fix.

Fortunately, March has traditionally sounded a call to action for local merchants of fine food and drink. This week, a go-getter group of restaurateurs around Red Bank and Rumson (as well as Middletown, Little Silver, Sea Bright and Shore points south) are roaring into gear with tonight’s return of the event known as A Taste of the Two Rivers, the continuation of Rumson Restaurant Month, and the kickoff to Red Bank Flavour Fixe.

‘FLAVOUR’ TO TEASE TASTE BUDS AND MORE

A restaurant-and-bar-led consortium has rolled out a multi-front web marketing campaign to boost Red Bank’s profile as a cultural destination.

Dubbed Red Bank Flavour, the campaign’s aim is to resharpen the town’s dulled edge as Monmouth County’s go-to place for dining and nightlife, a distinction it lost in recent years with the rise of Pier Village in Long Branch and the two-fisted resurgence of Asbury Park’s downtown and boardwalk.

“It’s about bringing people back to Red Bank, and letting people know that we’re still very vibrant,” says Valerie Aufiero of Front Street Trattoria.

RED BANK RENEWS PUSH FOR LATE CLOSINGS

As Red Bank continues to claw its way out of an economic hole it hasn’t seen since the we-don’t-like-to-talk-about-it Dead Bank days, Mayor Pasquale Menna tends to periodically jab downtown’s retailers with a reminder that it’s going to take work to bring Red Bank back as a top destination in the region and beyond.

Lately, though, he’s taken a firmer approach.

At a council meeting last month, when two requests for car shows on Broad Street appeared on the agenda, he paused from the typical rubber-stamping of such requests.

“This is a chance to tickle, pinch, smack our retailers to stay open on Sunday,” Menna said, and then pointed to Red Bank RiverCenter Executive Director Nancy Adams, who was seated in the audience. “Get the word out. Tell them to stay open on Sunday. I might start smacking instead of pinching.”

It was another lash at a limp horse he’s been flogging since before Red Bank’s business dipped with the national economy. For years, Menna has been urging merchants to move away from the nine-to-five mindset and keep the lights on after dark and on Sunday, when too many stores, he says, are closed.
