What would it take to get a large number of teenagers out of their houses, away from their cell phones and laptops, and back into their high school’s library at 7:30 on a weeknight? Apparently a healthy dose of gratitude will do the trick.

Over 20 students were present prior to the start of the September 9 meeting of the Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School Board of Education. They were there to express thanks for what they described as “a life-changing experience” – school-sponsored language-immersion trips to Canada and Guatemala.

As part of the Study Abroad Program at RFH, 22 students and five chaperones visited Guatemala from June 22 through July 2. The group stayed with host families and volunteered at a coffee plantation, helping to harvest and roast beans in the morning and attending Spanish language classes in the afternoon.

From July 7 through 15, two chaperones accompanied eight students on a language-immersion venture to the cities of Quebec and Montreal.  The group visited cultural sites and attended language classes, and stayed with host families as well.

Press release from Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School

Eleven students from Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School recently traveled to Hanzhou Entel Foreign Language School in China, as part of the RFH Study Abroad Initiative. The students participating in the visit to Hanzhou Entel were Eleanor Belluscio, Willis Manelski, Thomas Martello, Caroline Mindnich, Leigh Mueller, Maxwell Nitto, Peter Righi Jr., Elise Roncace, Brigid Schutsky, Stefani Sciametta, and Payton Wall. Chinese teacher Rebecca Wang and Superintendent Peter Righi acted as chaperones.

The trip — the first of its kind — took place from April 9 to 21, and marked an important first step toward building a bridge between language programs at RFH and those in China.

While at Hanzhou Entel, a private residential school that is RFH’s “sister school” in China, the students lived on campus and spent their weekend with nearby host families (also known as “buddy families”).

Teachers Hu Yuebo and Zheng Minfeng recently had an unusually long commute to school. They traveled from Hanzhou, China for a week-long visit to Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School.

While at RFH the two observed lessons, interacted with students and teachers, enjoyed dinners in their honor, participated in a bowling event, and even ate lunch in the RFH cafeteria.

“The chicken fingers were highly recommended by the students,” said Yuebo, who teaches English at Hanzhou Entel Foreign Language School, where Minfeng teaches Chinese and is the Vice Principal.

But this visit was about a lot more than chicken fingers. It represented a big step forward for the Study Abroad Program at RFH, which received its official approval by the RFH School Board at a meeting on November 12.

The inaugural study abroad trip for the new language immersion-based program, which took root at the high school in 2007, is planned for April 9-21, 2014.  That is when eleven RFH students will travel with two chaperones to the Hanzhou Entel Foreign Language School in Hanzhou, China.
