Sogo Sushi on Monmouth Street in Red Bank is known for its brown rice sushi. The very slight nutty taste and more robust texture of the brown rice make for a deliciously unique accompaniment to the usual sushi fare.
It’s also a bit addicting, and so we headed to get our fix for this week’s What’s For Lunch.
Joined by neighbor and frequent lunch companion, Brian McCourt, we sat down around noon in a mostly empty dining room, but by 1 p.m., nearly every table in the space was filled with diners taking advantage of the lunch specials.
Unlike some area sushi places that offer a tightly limited selection of rolls to choose from for lunch combinations, Sogo Sushi has a wide array of some really standout rolls on their lunch menu. Typical with most sushi lunch specials, these come with a soup and salad.
We had the Sushi Deluxe Lunch Special ($13.95), which came with eight pieces of sushi (including tuna, red snapper, yellow tail, cobia and striped bass) and a spicy crunch tuna roll.
We also had the Maki Roll Lunch Special (three rolls for $11.95), comprised of the Alaska Roll, Shrimp Tempura Roll and the Red Snapper Roll. The Red Snapper Roll was the real standout of the meal, and included red snapper (or, for Weird Al’s UHF fans, red snappah!), chili sauce, fish roe, cilantro and avocado.
