RED BANK: CHARTER SCHOOL SLATES FORUM

HOT-TOPIC_03The Red Bank Charter School plans to hold an open forum and press conference on its controversial expansion plan Tuesday at 7 p.m., the school announced Sunday.

“The press conference will provide clarity on a recent application amendment, after which the forum will be opened for community comment,” according to a press release.

RFH TOPS RBR AS BARRY LEADS

Rumson-Fair Haven’s Brendan Barry scored 27 points as the Bulldogs used strong defense in the 4th quarter to hold off Ridge Road rival Red Bank Regional in Rumson Saturday. Matt Reardon had 17 for the Bucs and Teddy Sourlis 12 for the Bulldogs, who have now won 12 straight games.  Shore Sports Zone has those highlights and more here.

After months of silence on the issue, a possible parking garage in downtown Red Bank finally got its wheels on what could be a long up-ramp to reality Wednesday night.

Despite misgivings voiced by Councilwoman Cindy Burnham that doing so might attract “an overload of engineers,” the borough council unanimously agreed to have the the planning board determine whether the municipal lot on White Street “satisfies the criteria for designation as a noncondemnation redevelopment area.”

LINCROFT: BCC HOSTS MINORITY CONFERENCE

“Each year, more and more males of color are enrolling in college with the goal of earning a degree and starting a rewarding career,” said Fidel Wilson, assistant professor at Brookdale Community College. “But gaps still remain, both in the classroom and in the workforce.”

On Friday, February 19,  BCC and the Monmouth/Ocean County Pan Hellenic Council will host the second annual “Minority Male Initiative” conference on the college’s Lincroft campus.

Hosted inside the Warner Student Life Center building, the free conference, titled “Finding a Career That Suits You,” will offer career-oriented workshops designed specifically for local high school seniors and current Brookdale students. It is co-sponsored by Meridian Health and Brookdale’s Educational Opportunity Fund program. The conference is open to local high school seniors and Brookdale students, and unique scholarship opportunities are available for eligible attendees.

LINCROFT: ARE YOU READY FOR SOME WINTER?

winterfestWhen life gives you winter, make Winterfest — the second annual edition of which returns to Lincroft’s Thompson Park this Saturday afternoon (pictured is a scene from the inaugural, snow-free Fest in 2015).

Winter may have made a much-delayed appearance, all at once and with a vengeance, in a way that immediately overstayed its welcome. But to the good people of the Monmouth County Parks System, the season of bare trees and bundled-up people is something to celebrate in all its sleek and spartan beauty. So when the low winter sun comes up on Thompson Park in Lincroft this Saturday, it will look down on the newly minted ritual known as Winterfest.

Going on between the hours of 1 to 5 pm, it’s the second annual edition of the event that’s designed to “banish the winter blues,” while spotlighting the many features and assets of the county’s flagship recreational facility — and this time, they’ve remembered to bring the snow.

HOT-TOPIC_03The panel charged with a hurry-up examination of the proposed Red Bank Charter School expansion teed up the institution for segregation in its report, unveiled at a borough council meeting Wednesday night.

“According to New Jersey Department of Education enrollment data, Red Bank Borough is home to the most segregated school district in the state of New Jersey, with deep disparity” in racial makeup, primary language skills and economic backgrounds, the report said.

RED BANK: COPS HONORED AS LIFESAVERS

Seventy-nine-year-old Michael Malloy was asleep when a lighted cigarette set his mattress on fire, authorities said. The officers, responding to a medical call, heard his cries for help and then crawled through the smoke-filled unit to rescue him and ensure no other victims were present, said Councilman and Police Commissioner Mike Whelan. HOCKEY: RBC GOES THROUGH THE ROOF IN WIN

An unusual pass through the roof trusses sparked a three-goal surge in the final 1:22 of play as Red Bank Catholic topped Rumson-Fair Haven on the ice at the Red Bank Armory Wednesday. After Will Catalono put R-FH in the lead with six minutes to go, Kyle Amato tied things up, and then the Caseys’ Evan Hoey sent a pass that went through the roof supports and fell down to Alec Mintz, who delivered the game winner. A WELLNESS FAIR FOR R-FH STAFFERS

A “Wellness Fair” for staff members was held at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School on the afternoon of January 21. The first of its kind at R-FH, the event featured 50-minute “breakout sessions” with activities and information centered on physical and emotional well-being. A variety of health-related presentations were offered in the RFH gymnasium as well.

Wellness Committee Staff Members Frank Gripp, Lauren Grumbach, Anna Higgins, Andrew Hudson, Linda Nill, and Lauren Thieme organized the Fair for their colleagues, with the event made possible through the generosity of local health practitioners and businesses, as well as staff members who donated their time and shared their expertise.

Local Smoke BBQ, which bailed from a possible Broad Street deal in 2014, will now set up its smoker in the former Delfini Gourmet Catering space at the corner of West Front Street and Rector Place/Shrewsbury Avenue, owner Steve Raab tells redbankgreen’s Retail Churn.

With two clocks ticking down to the same deadline, Red Bank officials expect to introduce a pair of bond ordinances Wednesday night in hopes of avoiding restrictions on water usage and new connections to the water system.

One would authorize $1.9 million in new debt to replace nearly every water meter in town. The other would bond $1.83 million pay for a new water well to supply the borough-owned water utility.

RED BANK: BARRIS TO JAZZ UP A STEAMY NIGHT

It’s a time of year when any perceived steaminess is probably just one’s breath fighting its way into the arctic air. But over at the old Anthony Reckless estate (home of the Woman’s Club of Red Bank), things are heating up with the first in a new season of Reckless Steamy Nights music events.

The intimate, house-party style concerts — a long-running monthly series that takes a holiday hiatus each November and December — remains a genuine “best kept secret” within a fast-changing nightscape of borough life, a presentation of the Jersey Shore Jazz and Blues Foundation that raises spirits even as it raises funds for a scholarship program of the JSJBF.

HOT-TOPIC_03A panel commissioned to review the proposed expansion by the Red Bank Charter School is expected to express “concern” about the plan’s impact on borough taxpayers, Mayor Pasquale Menna told redbankgreen.

Menna, who appointed the so-called blue-ribbon commission and participated in its closed-door meeting Monday night, said the body’s report will also air misgivings about what he termed the “strong and overwhelming” disparity between the charter school and the local school district in terms of demographic makeup.

This is the largest donation yet received by the library foundation, with $10,000 being donated annually for five years.

RBR OFFERS BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM

IBThe stress of the college application season is just about winding down, as students now anticipate learning where they are accepted — and, ultimately, which school they will attend. But next year at this time, the newly minted college freshmen will be dealing with other challenges, such as transitioning to the academic demands of higher education.

Recently, three students from Red Bank Regional High School were interviewed about a program they were participating in; one which they believe will serve them well once they transition to college. The students (pictured left to right: Manny Sanchez, Claire Toomey and Ray Bernard) offered their thoughts on the school’s International Baccalaureate (IB) program; first made available during the 2009-2010 school year to to upper classmen at RBR — one of only four schools in Monmouth County (and one of only 12 in the entire state of New Jersey) that offers this rigorous and internationally renowned program.

RED BANK: BASIE ISSUES ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS

When the red carpet is rolled out for the 11th annual Basie Awards on May 18, the Count Basie Theatre will do more than issue its customary honors for excellence in area high school theater and performing arts. The ceremony will also be the setting for the awarding of four arts impact scholarships — the Moser-Taboada Arts Impact Scholarship, the Monmouth Medical Center – Barnabas Health Arts Impact Scholarship, the Monmouth County Freeholders’ Basie Scholarship for Continuing Education and the new Siciliano Landscape Company Arts Impact Scholarship. 

The Monmouth County Freeholders’ scholarship will be awarded to a student attending a New Jersey-based college in the fall — and Basie board members are urging all interested students to prepare their applications now.
