HISTORY SAVED FROM THE TRASH

Somebody out there apparently didn’t think much of Red Bank’s history.

Back in the early spring, borough resident Dana Benjamin spotted an intriguing item for sale on e-Bay: a book of maps of Red Bank from 1914. Her husband, Brian, bought the collection sight unseen for $240, and then went down to Asbury Park to pick it up. There, the seller—whose name Benjamin doesn’t recall—told him his wife had found it in a pile of trash behind Asbury Park City Hall.

RED BANK: PADILLA ‘WOMEN’ ON THE WING

Beginning with a 1 p.m. performance Wednesday, seven opportunities remain for the general public to catch The Women of Padilla, the latest in an ever-growing portfolio of plays that have made their world premiere on the Red Bank stage of Two River Theater.

Written by Tony Meneses (whose previously produced project here was Guadalupe in the Guest Room), the drama is an ensemble piece that reflects an ongoing commitment by the theater company to develop and promote new works by Latino creators. It’s also a succinct and slightly surreal piece with an underlying universal quality — a glimpse at the home front in a time of seemingly eternal war, as well as the ways in which we find family, build community, and latch onto gossamer wings of hope whenever something important goes missing from our lives.

RED BANK: SAN REMO CLOSES IN ON MOVE

After nearly three years of planning and construction, Abdellah “Giovanni” Boudour says he looks forward to swapping a hard hat for his chef’s toque when San Remo restaurant finally opens next month in Red Bank.

Since buying the building at the corner of Oakland Street and Bridge Avenue in 2010, Boudour has split his time between overseeing the renovations and running the kitchen at the San Remo’s current location, on Newman Springs Road in Shrewsbury.

During that time he dealt with zoning processes and building permits to renovate the site from what was the Oakbridge Tavern – and, for decades before that, the Little Kraut – into his dream of a casual restaurant offering “fine dining at decent prices.”
