In an effort to break the Democratic lock on the Red Bank council, this year’s Republican candidates have set their sights squarely on a Democratic stronghold: the West Side.
At events and in campaign literature, Allison Gregory and Jonathan Maciel Penney have sought to align themselves with minority groups and residents threatened with displacement from the West Side as a result of gentrification.

Pedestrian-safety improvements would be installed at two Red Bank crosswalks, including one where a pedestrian suffered fatal injuries when struck by a truck four years ago, if approved by the borough council Wednesday night.

A pedestrian incurred minor injuries when he was struck by a vehicle in Fair Haven in early morning darkness Monday, police said.
Rain forced a one-week postponement of the Red Bank Halloween parade Sunday. But the 39th annual Red Bank Crop Walk drew hundreds of participants who completed a five-mile circuit that began and ended at Red Bank Regional High.

Continuing a tradition now in its 23rd year, the candidates on the November 5 ballot for two three-year terms on the Red Bank council are scheduled to face off and answer audience audience questions Thursday night.
After years of discussion, some of it quite heated, Red Bank’s Bellhaven Natural Area is about to get a makeover.
Weather conditions appear favorable for a pair of Halloween-themed events in Red Bank, according to the National Weather Service.
The festivities begin 7 p.m. Friday at Count Basie Fields with a Halloween Egg Hunt. Clear skies and cool temperatures are expected.
Sunday’s parade, the 72nd annual, will assemble as it did last year at Irving Place at Arthur Place starting at 1 p.m., with a kickoff an hour later. As of Friday morning, the forecast called for a 40-percent chance of rain after 3 p.m., when the activities will be winding down.

Robert M. Rechnitz, who co-founded Red Bank’s Two River Theater with his wife, Joan, died at his home Saturday, the theater announced Wednesday. He was 89 years old.

More than a decade after it began, an effort to turn prime riverfront property in Fair Haven into a park ended with a ribbon-cutting Tuesday evening.
Dubbed “Williams, Albert and Robards Park” for the successive generations of the family that lived there, the site at the northern end of Denormandie Avenue will now serve as a place for “contemplation,” Mayor Ben Lucarelli told several dozen onlookers at a brief ceremony.
As much as two inches of rain may drench the Greater Red Bank Green Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

An otherwise mild week that begins with Columbus Day could be interrupted Wednesday by a good soaking. The area that includes the Greater Red Bank Green may get an inch or more from a storm that will also bring gusty winds Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.
