With Hurricane Irene lumbering up the East Coast packing destructive winds of 100 miles per hour, officials in Sea Bright ordered residents and visitors off the sandbar peninsula Friday.
The evacuation of the town’s 1,800 or so residents is expected to be completed by 4 p.m. Saturday. And while no enforcement is anticipated, Councilman Read Murphy warns that anyone who stays behind is on his or her own if conditions require that emergency personnel leave also. “if you’re here and you’re in trouble, we’re probably not going to come get you,” he says.
Hardware store owner Frank Bain tells redbankgreen that locals in a “frenzy” have cleared his shelves of emergency necessities such as flashlights, batteries and coolers. “No one has been cavalier about this storm,” he says.
