Feeling walled in by Where Have I Seen This? Maybe that’s because last week’s photo also spotlighted a building wall.
That one, a long red brick edifice, featured “ghost” signage for Citarella’s Meats and Deli and Wrigley’s spearmint gum. But it was not, as several readers assumed, on the side of the Citarella’s as we know it, on Prospect Avenue in Red Bank.
Rather, it was across town at the original location of the store, on Bridge Avenue, opposite the train station.
A year ago, redbankgreen’s PieHole food page featured a fascinating history of the business, which started out on the front porch of a house before moving to the Bridge Avenue site, and then did long stints in Sea Bright and Little Silver before ending up in its present location on the East Side.
The signage is partly hidden by the shack that served as home to the now-defunct Dave’s Car Wash, but is visible to customers of adjoining businesses who use the parking lot there.
Thanks to all who wrote in on this one: Yvonne MacDonald, Jenn Woods, John Oakley (who knows from historical signage, ghostly and otherwise), Wade Davis, Les Hathaway, Nick Lembesis, Sandy Talarico, the Colmorgen Kids, Ken Barber, Dave Martin and Trish DePonti.
